I wonder how the Ubin hornbills are doing

If you didn't know, last semester I did a research project on native Oriental Pied Hornbills.

There's about 10-20? of them living on Pulau Ubin, and I had the chance to study their nesting habits. And for the new chicks, see them born, hatch, and fledge (i.e. leave the nest).

Made a movie of it too, though I wonder what became of it :)

I miss the work outdoors! The scorching heat, the cold rainy days, the cycling on dirt road and muddy shoes at the end of the day. It certainly beats sitting on your ass in front of the computer all day right??

Some photos for your pleasure.

 Peace Out!

A snippet of the future

I'm 80 years old, a bit wrinkly, (still as georgeous as ever I might say)
In a garden full of trees and flowers....

sitting back, resting my tired feet on a stool....

And my youngest grandchild... aged 4, dark curly hair, brown eyes, cute as a button! Fiddling with his new tekkie gadget.

And he's peering up to me with his big curious eyes, "You mean you had to use wires to get power?"

I smile and say, "Yes honey."

"And the ends had.... plugs? with two pins and 3 pins u had to stick into the wall?? Boy! that's wierd!" he frowns in confusion.

"Yes.... those were the days when we didn't have wireless power" I sighed, as I reminisce the times my mum would give up trying to make those things neat.

What spurned this blast to the future? http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/6129460.stm "Physics promises wireless future."
Interesting to imagine the possibilities isn't it?

Peace out!

I exist primarily to understand the world

Took an online Myers-Briggs test just now. Interesting revelations. Thanks to friends Yam and Vani who brought it up during diner last night.

I am a straight-up INTP -

INTP - "Architect". Greatest precision in thought and language. Can readily discern contradictions and inconsistencies. The world exists primarily to be understood. 3.3% of total population.

Perceiving (P) 60.53% Judging (J) 39.47%

Of course the test and how I answered it could be flawed. But the descriptions are pretty true. Though I'd take a different view... the world exists primarily to be understood... therefore I exist primarily to understand the world.

Languages like music to the ears

In a moment of epiphany while listening to Korean love songs. why Korean love songs u may ask? cos it just happened to be on the playlist and I was wanting to listen to something foreign. It occurred to me, that the Korean songs just seem more romantic (i.e. sad and sappier) than english love songs. (No offence to Koreans or korean loving people ya)

And it occurred to me that some languages are just more emotive than others. Like u can fall in love with the person just because they're speaking the language. Like French, they don't have to be singing anything, just talk and I can listen for hours without a clue what the heck they're on about.

Arabic is also lively. German's very gruff sounding, quite monotonous. Bahasa Indonesia is very sing-y... total opposite of German.

English I realise, varies depending on your native tongue. English spoken by a French is totally different from the British. heck, even Britons and Americans speak differently.

But that's just to my ears. :D

Peace!

Funny of the day

Occurred to me that most of our evenings are spent on the computer or laptop, surfing the internet, or chatting on MSN, or (the law forbid) downloading music and movies illegally.

Funny how everyone in my family has a laptop. All 5 of us. And our evenings are spent in our separate spaces, individual occupations with the help of the Internet. Here's a snippet of communication after dinner

8:00 pm: All members of the family aged beloow 25 are at their laptops
8:01pm: Dad plugs his LAN cable
8:02: Zaf notices her download rate is decreasing fast (It was a legal free download from calabash music ok?!)
8:02: Younger bro and elder bro disconnected from MSN
8:02: Dad happily surfing the internet
8:03: Zaf and bro disabled & enabled LAN connection
8:04: "Limited or No connectivity" bubble still shows
8:04: Zaf bitches about the connection. Younger bro enters room, asks," Can you connect to the Internet?" Zaf,"No"... Bro,"Me neither... but Abah can... we got disconnected after he got connected... why?" Zaf:"Dunno" (I'm a sis of few words)
8:05: Zaf and younger bro turns off and turns on again whatever that can be turned off and turned on again, with the hope of a reconnection.
8:20: Zaf and younger bro gives up.

Oh... somewhere between me and my brother trying to do all possible magic to get connected again, older bro left his laptop, and went to sleep.

10:00 pm: Zaf's magic fingers did the trick. ANd we're back online!! Older bro wakes up and continues his work and chat. :S

So a snippet sums up my family. Dad the oblivious. Zaf the quiet, underrated tekkie genius, younger bro the chatterbox and older bro the opportunist.

And I'm still getting low download bitrate :S why.. why... why....???

World Peace - what will it be like?

Halfway through a cup of coffee, had a thought... (Thanks in part to the wonderful effects of caffeine!)

What would the world look like when we attain world peace? (Yes, WHEN and not IF. I'm optimistic!)

How would it be... living in a world without wars, without discrimination, without poverty and hunger, without destruction?

If your answer is "BORING!!" then we have a long way to go...

What I hope for:

News headlines CELEBRATING LIFE and its achievements
Death & destruction few and none at all
Progress of people from every culture, every age, any gender.

Equal opportunities without discrimination nor inferiority
Unbiased sharing of knowledge and sharing ideas
Understanding without prejudice, acceptance with open mind
The attainment of each and every persons's potential

Of greenery, of wildlife abundance & diversity
Breathing air pure and clean

The request for help heeded,
Cries of desperation & helplessness silenced

The growth of knowledge in the self, the community, the world
A feeling of gratefulness for every day that we've lived.

Yes, today some of us are closer than others in experiencing this. But it ain't world peace till everyone's livin' it.

First step begins with the simple belief that world peace is possible... And it's NOT a bore, but a world of infinite possibilities.

Salaam!

World Bank & IMF Meeting in Singapore

Was watching StarNews Asia. Interesting report.

" The dispute of the protests have cast an unwelcome spotlight on Singapore's political restrictions and curbs on freedom of expression "

" While Singapore sees IMF/World Bank Meetings as an opportunity to show off its economy and ability to hold world class events...."

It's quite the irony to see the plastered faces of the "4 million smiles" of Singaporeans welcoming the WB/IMF delegates... in empty closed off roads and streets. In another news clip, indoor demonstrations/protests require us to register our names. Stifling indeed.

But hey, security is important and the law's to be respected. But seriously, if the ban on street protests were really lifted, will we care? Will we go out and hold banners and shout slogans? Will Singaporeans stop traffic to voice their grieviance? I think majority will not, for self-security, for survival, for fear of retaliation. For we've been ingrained to prioritise economic development above all unfortunately. How long does it take for us to mature out of this narrow road?

 Peace!

Better Late than Never!

OK, OK. So I jumped on this blogging bandwagon really really late. Kind of skeptical about it in the beginning, wondering why the heck would people wanna pour out their thoughts for everyone else to read. Is there nothing kept personal these days??

But there's no fighting it! Succumbed to the wave of times... I'm a blogging virgin no more! Just like everyone else, Zaf's blog will have whatever she fancies :) Hopefully, most of the time, it'll have some benefit to everyone reading.

Peace!
